What do the new reporting requirements by the Home Office mean?

Previously, citizens of certain countries who come to work in the UK were required to register themselves with the police and report certain developments regarding their circumstances—such as changing addresses, switching jobs, or getting an extension to their immigration permission—to the police.

But in a move that has been welcomed by both the Met Police and individuals who were affected by this reporting requirement, the Home Office removed the requirement with effect from the 4th of August 2022.

Any future sponsored workers will not have to register with the police or report any changes and risk facing prosecution for not doing so.

While there’s been no official announcement by the Home Office, individuals who may be affected are being informed by the Home Office and the police of these changes.

What does this change mean?

In a notice issued by the Home Office, National Police Chiefs’ Council and Counter Terrorism Policing confirmed that:

  • Individuals who have been issued with a visa under the police registration requirement but have not yet travelled to the UK will either have their visa reissued if possible or will be notified of the change in their conditions before travelling
  • The police registration requirement will no longer be imposed when obtaining immigration permission
  • Individuals who received the public notice are no longer required to register with the police (this includes individuals who are waiting for an appointment)
  • Proof of compliance with the requirement is no longer needed for applications for further UK immigration permission
  • Individuals who have already paid the registration fee before the scheme is suspended won’t be refunded
  • Individuals with existing immigration permission containing the police registration condition won’t have their visa or BRP amended but they no longer have to retain their police registration certificate or report any changes to the information included on it to the police

It should be noted, however, that individuals with immigration permission that contains the police reporting requirement still need to report certain changes such as a change in address or change to the name or personal details either online or by physically filling the change of circumstances form and mailing it by post.

They can also request replacement BRP online if their details change.
